1st one of my projects for 17 Ufosin 2017 challenge

My 3rd project has begone!!!! Memory To All Mothers In War. How quickly this year is going because of my deadlines with Meredith’s Challenge.  Im trying to keep up with one project each 21 days and so far its working, when I have time in the day time I work on them, my evening are usually hand work, so  I can sit and relax and not worry about a deadline or time.

This quilt was started in PNG 20 years ago!!!!! I made the centre put it on points then added the first triangle then it was packed away for years as I did not know how to add the purple fabric as it was cut on the bias and kept stretching so much so I finally packed it away. years later I added those purple triangles and the corners to with the fans make it in to a square. Then about 18 months ago I made up the final borders with appliqué   Background is a soft aqua Kimono which is 100% pure wool. a very very fine wool fabric and so lovely to work with, appliqué is cotton and silk.

My 3rd Project for 17Ufosin2017 I call this a memory to all war mothers. Because the purple kimono fabric is from WW11 and was patched and patched my be 100 times as the mother could not afford a new one. Times are always difficult for women and children every were when their countries are at war.

Well it started now my quilting challenge for 2017. 1st day of 2017 I started pulling and finding some of the 17 UFO’s I have chosen  to work on this year !

Sara Jeans quilt, were I took up the challenge

Sara Jeans quilt, were I took up the challenge

This quilt started out as a baby cot in Jan 2015 and as I was making the centre I realised it was just NOT Practical as a baby quilt, those centre 5blocks are made of felt pieces and would not stand up to constant washing that a baby quilt would require, so I let it keep growing, but then life happen and it was shelved, in Dec 2016 Meredith threw out this challenge and my mojo for quilting was back and life in general was steady.

Sunday 1st of Jan saw me pulling quilt pieces out ready to start on the 2nd of Jan.    First I finished machine appliquing around the sheep,  I have done trapunto quilting as I machine appliquéd them on!!!!!!!

Back of machine appliqued sheep

Back of machine appliquéd sheep cutting away the backing fabric and wadding and just leaving the sheep as trapunto

to make the sheep look rounder, fatter, and jolly.  Worst part was cutting the fabric and wadding around the sheep at the back, not fun at all as I was scared I was going to cut the front fabric.  Then this border had two wee Blue-Work  blocks added either end and sewn to the rest of the quilt,

Closer view of those dancing sheep LOL

These delightful wee Bluework blocks were made for me in a swap in 2

These delightful wee Bluework blocks were made for me in a swap by quilters all over Australia around 2007 and Ive use 7 of 12 here .

then Murphy’s law struck and I could not find the border strips to finish of that last addition????  It took me 2 days and then I found it when looking for Christmas paper to store till next Christmas LOL.  Quilt top was finally finished 11.30pm on the 4th Jan 2017

5th of Jan I pushed two large foldaway tables together and put the backing wadding and quilt top together to bast.

Taped to the tables ready for basting.

Taped to the tables ready for basting.

And started basting,  6th not much done as I was helping DGD make a shoulder bag for her girlfriends birthday gift.  7th sat down to the table at 6.30am and basted for 1  1/2 hrs it was so quiet, still, Peacefull and slightly cool perfect to baste.  In the Avo I did another hour and quit was about 1/2 basted.  I baste about every 6 inches so there is roughly 4inchs with no stitches, this is a lot of basting but it will stay like this for 10 years and still be OK ready for some one to quilt by hand or machine.  12am 9th Jan 2017 finished basting the quilt, it took a good 5 hrs to baste it.

  1. Pamela says:

Beautiful quilt. I love the bluework on the borders. Best of luck with the water problems!

    • glenda says:

Hi Pamela we had 5inchs last night and it was just to much for the run offs I have dug one deeper and the other one needs my DGS who is 16 nearly 6feet and very strong, hope fully he is free this week-end as we need about 4 metres dug out from behind the unit to stop the seepage there. Just hope we don’t get torrential rain again before then. Wool rugs smell so horrible when they get wet and take ages to dry again. Cheers from Glenda Down Under.

  2. It’s such a fun quilt…so much variety in it !! 🙂

    • glenda says:

Thank you Deb, I have had many of these blocks for around 9 years, Blue-work was a swap I was in in 2007 and the drunkard path blocks around the same time lovely fabrics in those blocks. So they finally found a home. Annabelle blocks I made around 2013 maybe earlier time flies, I adore her she is Michele Marll’s creation Michele is very talented. backing is a 100% cotton sheet I picked up in a Opp shop soft blue with big white daises, so it is made up from lots of UFOs LOL cheers Glenda

  3. Maggie says:

    Dear Glenda,
What is with all this rain? We had a winter storm, snow and then all this rain. Cleaning g up the snow is what we did yesterday, time to sew has been put back this side as well. Your UFO challenge for 2017 is doing well. It is off to a fantastic year!

    • glenda says:

Lovely to see your name Maggie it always makes me smile. Our wet has just begun and we are water logged all ready after just 10 days it has been so torrential. Not far from us they and 1 metre in 2 days lucky they are on the coast so it runs off in to the sea but they still had a lot of flooding. Im off now to do some sashiko quilting Im enjoying doing it as you push the needle through with a thimble in the palm of your hand not with your fingers much easier on arthritic fingers. Thimbles come from Japan. Hugs Glenda

  4. Anonymous says:

    G’day Glenda,
I was thinking of you yesterday and saying there should be a fair amount of water going over Barron Falls at the moment! Didn’t realise it would be going via your sewing room (lol) !!! Cheers Wendy

    • glenda says:

There has been a Huge amount going over we have had 7 1/2 inchs here in 2 days at Babinda 1 metre in 2 days so yes Tinnaroo dam is full and the Barron Falls roaring LOL Cheers Glenda

  5. Karen says:

hope your flooding problem improves – with weather it always seems like it is all or nothing. take care!

    • glenda says:

Hi Karen we had another 2 1/2 inches last night but the ditch I dug beside the front of unit and the hold I dug for drainage out the back worked hopefully we will not get torrential rain like Tuesday night before the weekend when hubby and DGS may be will retrench that last 4 metres for the drainage. Bright side is it has been to wet to be out side so lots of quilting been done. Cheers Glenda

    • glenda says:

We had another 2 1/2 inches last night Karen but my ditch I dug and the soak hole I dug worked as no flood water this morning in the unit. Im not working in the garden any more over the wet which is usually 3 or 4 months to many leeches. I go around the section each morning in gumboots and rubber gloves and pick up the palm and tree fern fronds and thats it. So Im trying to sashiko 2 quilts before the end of Jan Hugs Glenda.

  6. What a pretty quilt – I love the dancing sheep!

    • glenda says:

Hi Ann thanks for dropping in, those sheep are as white as the ones in your photo’s LOL so they must come from the UK not OZ but they are going to end up in Holland!!!!!!! Cheers Glenda

  7. Maggie says:

Glenda, I would love to see the thimble and how it is used. Your work is always inspirational. It gets me moving to get cracking on. Just started two Quilts, which will be going to two twenty-one year old ladies in March. Not sure if it will be done by then, but I will be aiming to get them to be done. Spent the day prepping yesterday, today the house needs my attention. Blue is all the colour I will be working with for a while.

    • glenda says:

Maggie will try and write some time today to you and send some photos of thimble. 1am here right now LOL. 8PM now. Maggie I have sent you an email Hugs.

  8. Great way to report. I think I’ll borrow your idea, if I may, as that way I’ll be sure to work on my project each of their allotted 21 days. Two sweet quilts, Glenda. Thanks for sharing.

    • glenda says:

Thanks Angie it works for me as Im better working under pressure and a time limit. You can try it and see if it works for you, Id love to have some UFO’s finished this year and I have one so far and the other is pretty close to been finished too. So Im so grateful that Meredith came up with this challenge. Cheers Glenda

    • glenda says:

Hi Angie, go for it if you want to report this way I find it easy to take photos as I progress and add then straight away so I don’t loose track of what Im doing , mainly because I have to many projects going at once and I’d honestly forget LOL Im very very close to finishing another quilt but this is not one of my 17 LOL Hugs Glenda

  9. Eileen Keane says:

Your bear quilt is adorable! I really like your blue work as well. You’ve done better than I have this month.

    • glenda says:

Hi Eileen I was rather sad to see that wee quilt go but it has gone to a wee boy of 3 months who lives in holland so it will keep him lovely and warm and not be to big to drag around with him LOL We are in to our wet season which means Im in doors a lot so this is the time of the year when I do most of my sewing. Once the wet is over we are out doors all day if we can? Cheers Glenda

  10. Angie says:

Sara’s quilt is wonderful! You accomplished a lot by focusing on it for 21 days!

  11. wendy says:

well done, some great progress there! Love the trapunto sheep!

    • glenda says:

Thanks Wendy they were so much fun to make, I grew up in NZ and as a child all sheep were black and then spinning took a strong hold around 1970’s 1980’s and slowly black sheep were allowed on farms, so I had to add one to Sara’s quilt too. Cheers Glenda

  12. You have made some amazing progress and I love both projects ; well done! 🙂 Those sheep need petted 🙂

    • glenda says:

When I was a child Deb I grew up on a dairy and sheep farm in NZ and every year I had one or two pet lambs so I enjoyed adding them to this quilt as the little girls mum comes from NZ and she had pet lambs as a child. . Cheers Glenda

  13. Meredithe says:

You’ve done so well, Glenda! Love the black and white sheep. Can’t believe how much you achieved – keep going!!
