WOW or WIPs 17th April 2018

This week has been very sew sewing wise, most of the week was coughing sneezing and sleeping, but finally I’m back sewing a little and I’ve been just concentrating on my Red and Black quilt sashings of circles. Thank you all for your best wishes to get better it was so nice to read them.

Jnnnb

Where I was up to last week with my blocks laid out and sashing strips placed  with those red circles been played with. I ended up staying with this lay out then feel sick and nothing happened!!!!

Jnnb

WHile putting them away to keep them clean and safe I laid my strips and circles together and what I saw was What if!!!! I added those circles first on to the strips  it would be so much easier to machine applqiue them than on a full quilt top?

Hbbbbb

So I needle turned the seams as I did not want to use iron on for these circles and have a raw edge.

Hav.

I wanted a little 3D effect so ironed on some thick pellon at the back for my stabaliser

Jhbb

As I’m not using any on I have basted all these circles down first to the back ground to stop any movement that will distort the circle.  It takes time but very quick to sew down as there are no needles in the way and you get that perfect circle or near perfect LOL After machine appliqueing them I’m cutting away access and getting a soft 3D look.

Why is there no centre circle?  it is to big and nestles over the seam allowances so ahs to be added when those seams are sewn.

Hbbvvc

You can see the edges  over lapping those seams here.

Jnnnn

Finally one row of blocks joined

Jnbb

This morning I’ve managed to add another set of rows, these are waiting for the large circles to be hand basted down before machine appliqued

Ugggg

setting up the last row of blocks for joining cross ways.

Sorry if it is a over load of photos but they are for  a few members who have asked if I would show them how I was going to construct it all ?

My tiny houses are on hold but machine still set up waiting for number 17!!!!!

Glenda, as always your blocks look lovely. Those circles just really add bling. Spring still hasn’t come to the farm but the grass is turning green. Happy stitching!

Hi Gretchen 2 days ago Autumn crept in with a cold snap that shock us all up at a Dawn Parade of returned soldiers at 5am! It took me 2 hrs to get warm after wards. I came home and pulled ou5 m6 woolies. It had not been below 22C and that morning it was 16C which is very cold for us here in the tropics. This morning it was 13C and I had to get out of bed early to take a hot shower to warm up LOL. Hugs from Down Under.

This secondary pattern changes your quilt so very much, IMO, and it is stunning to take it all in. I would be one of those that needed the pics, and still and a little vague on how you used the heavier stabilizer behind the circles. You put in enough just behind each row on the backing, and hand basted the circles from the front, no? And that’s how you got the perfect circle and puff each time with your machine stitch, yes? 😉 (I’m not sure mine would Ever look quite that good.)

Truly, I love coming here! You are so generous with sharing and teaching your technique. Many thanks, and glad you are feeling a bit better.

Hi Julie, yes I ironed on a medium weight pellon to the back, same size less 1/4 for the seam. Then baste down the circles from the front. ( Many quilters use spots of glue
instead now.) But its not possible in my climate. After machine appliqueing them down I cut away all the access pellon and just leave it in the circle. When you quilt the top you will have two layers of batting covering those circles instead of one and this gives that 3D puff. Try making just one circle on a piece of fabric like this, then sandwich it as a mini mini quilt and do a quilting stitch around the circle !!!!! Magic. Cheers Glenda

I love that black sashing with the circles for the red/black quilt. What a great idea it looks perfect for that quilt.
The plants are great even if you do not think they are right now! I spotted one that is grown as a house plant here and I have not seen it outside – maybe it is grown outside on the tip of Florida where it is warmer most all the time.

  4. Kyle says:

I love the circles in the sashing. It adds another great design element.

  5. Oh Glenda! Standing Ovation, clapping! The circles are brilliant. They totally add the right touch and interest. So well done, woman!
I’ve not been myself, what with moving across the country and now having to move again, I’m so insecure and distracted. Glad to hear from you and love your work! Clap, clap! LeeAnna

Hi LeeAnna thanks for dropping in, hope you enjoyed your visit, I all ways enjoy visiting yours, I usually come away thinking or motivated. Sorry to read you are moving again, I hate moving now. For 30 odd years we moved every couple of years with Hubbys work, now I never want to move again!!! Would be a nightmare afte4 been her3 20 years ? Thank goodness you have your art to exspress your self. Big big hugs Glenda.

Ah! changing seasons are always good for colds and flu! I am glad you are feeling better. Your red and black quilt is lovely and the circles are very “you”. I like the big one overlapping. Esther’s block are looking pretty.
