The first of many that came in to the garden 4 weeks ago. It was so big and incredibly beautiful and so docile I was able to take many photos of it.

Its hard to remember that there are only weeks of 2016 left were did 2016 go to?????

I have been off line the last few weeks due to flu but I hope Im on track again now?

One thing that has been wonderful is my iPad I have been able to visit Houston Quilt Show and many wonderful blogs to help past the hours in bed.  How wonderful to have this tool at our finger tips.

Penny Rugs

When I was very small I remember my Grandmother sewing coloured fabric to an old grey army blanket of my Grandfathers what I remember the most was all the bright colours, while she sewed she would thread some thick thread on to a darning needle and give me her BIG tin button box and I would make my self  a necklace from the buttons while she sewed.  Her button tin was full of glass and crystal buttons it was like a jewel box to me; the  below started from those memories.

It started with a WW11 grey army blanket that came my way about 3 months ago and it must have made me thing of Penny Rugs and stirred old memories.

I thought about the shape I was working on and it did not make me excited LOL

I was not happy with the shape of the blanket for the design I had been thinking of, so out came the scissors and I made a huge circle and started adding little circles.

Im using very heavy wool felts for the big circles about 1/8th thick, I think it is going to be difficult to sew them to the rug, will try using a leather sewing needle first.

My second lot of circles are all ready to be sewn on each circles has a inner circle which I have blanket stitched on in bright contrasting DMC threads using mostly 6 strands.  I will do the same for the outer circles.

To keep the circles in place Im adding double sided tape which is a commercial one so quiet thick. It is sticky enough to hold them in place so they don't blow away and when I finally sew them down they will add a little 3D to the circles.

Im using tags to firmly attach the circles to the centre of the Rug as I will be moving the rug alot when I start sewing them down.

Love that! Such a good idea to use your tag gun to add the felt circles and stop them shifting about too much. It’s looking great.
Hope that you are over the ‘flu now – nasty bug!

    • glenda says:

Thanks for visiting Plum, it does make my day when quilters drop in to say hello. Those large felt circles are over 1/8th thick and I know I’m going to have a difficult time sewing through them, even thinking of trying to sew them on with my 1940s singer that sews leather and canvas no problem then do blanket stitch over the seams by just picking up some of the felt. Will let you know when I try it LOL. Hugs Glenda

  2. I’m sorry you had the flu, glad you are feeling better. The moth is lovely, so brightly colored. Happy sewing with you penny rug. Blessings, Gretchen

Hi Gretchen yes that butterfly was stunning, the orange was incrediable, a very burnt orange that glowed. They came in for about 7 days and then nothing. I was lucky to see them. I’m having a lot of fun with the Penny Rug as I love playing with colours. Hope you managed to get all the out door chores completed before winter hits you. Hugs Glenda

  3. Karen says:

that project is certainly interesting, so many colors and so many circles! Hope you are feeling better every day!

    • glenda says:

Hi Karen thanks for dropping in as I know you must still be recovering from Houston Show. Thanks for sharing that with us all, it was a great photo of LE. I’m now looking forwArd to you making Mrs Billinhams quilt one day, what a quilt and I know yours will be beautiful. Hugs Glenda

  4. Maggie says:

    Dear Glenda

Welcome back, I wondered what had happened to you. So glad you are better, love the penny rug. This side winter is fast approaching, just finished a baby quilt, so now I have to get a couple of things finished before Christmas arrives. Where did the year go?

    • glenda says:

Hi Maggie it’s pretty good feeling well enough to blog again but I will be glad to start a brand new year and it has to be better health wise than this one was LOL. I agree were did this year go to, only weeks till Xmas!!!! I have a few presents but not as many as I usually have by this time. I need to get busy. Hugs Glenda

    • glenda says:

Marsha it is sooooo much fun, from cutting out the circles to playing with them when I’m trying to place them. 3 months ago I nearly handed all my felt material in to the Opp shop LOL. Cheers Glenda

  5. Chris says:

I like the second center full of circles. I am reminded of crackers and cheese seeing all the prepped circles waiting to be stitched down.

    • glenda says:

Hi Chris your comment on crackers and cheese reminds me of the cracker advert on TV LOL. The outer circle hopefully will look like the inner circles??? I need a couple more circles cut out before I can start on that circle, there will be very little of my large box of felts when Im Finished this. So I’m stash busting my felts. Hugs Glenda

  6. Marsha says:

Just visiting again. I started my penny rug way back with my first comment and have yet to finish it. In fact, I put it in the cabinet in the hallway instead of my sewing room and forgot about it until the other day.
I’m itching to get it back out to work on again. I’m thinking of entering it into the state fair IF I can get it finished in time.
It’s a lot of hand sewing.

    • glenda says:

Hello Marsha, how nice to see a old friend again, my Penny rug is rolled up waiting for me to find away to attach the penny circles to the rug with out removing them all now that I have them all looking so good. Just had an idea I could make around each of them with coloured ink pens ???? Must try that? Will keep my fingers crossed that you complete yours for the State Fair? I have not had so much time to sew this year so not a lot to show, may be 2020 will be my sewing year. Cheers Glenda.
