I have removed all the little bits and pieces and sewing down the top lac e that reminds me of hanging wisteria, and the Caroline lady using beads.

It’s slow and relaxing, much more so than writing a late blog LOL. First I laid some dusky pink silk fabric then the share lace over the top 1/2 of the block with a 1/2 inch lace across the very top to anchor any thing up there to later on?  Will take me 5or 6 days to addthe beads to her dress and the above sheer lace.

Rods going to put a handle on the wheel when. We find the right one. This wheel is the heavy wheel that was made for a crank shaft, the lighte4 ones came out in the 20s when they started to add the little electrical motors were mounted on to the back of the machine?

After Hubby had adapted the above a friend bequeathered this beauty to me, some thing I have been wishing for since I was around 23? when we moved around the Pacfic Island when we often did not have power, so if you wish hard and long enough it happens.

  1. I have fond memories of sewing clothes on my grandmother’s treadle machine. My niece has it now. When a visiting aunt saw me sewing on it, she gave me her electric sewing machine that she had with her in her car. I’ve never looked back since.
Your silk top is lovely and I’m glad that you found your pieces so that you could finish the top.

Hi Rosemarie, I think these treadle sewing machines are more loved now than they ever were. My mum gave me her’s when I was 8 and the draws were carved in acorns and acorn leaves and I’d lye in bed think how beautiful it was and wonder who carved it, I was so proud of it. when I was 16 we moved from the farm to a city and for some reason my dad would not let me take the machine with me and he gave it to a cousin and it broke my heart. So 50 odd years later I have had another one gifted to me and I will cherish it as I did the other one. Cheers Glenda

    Dear Glenda
Those Singer Machines still get our hearts racing like a Porche after a hundred years. Funny how just seeing the decals on those machines get us so excited. Only sewed on one of those at my godmother house, once.
Your churndash quilt looks amazing, especially with your applique border with all those gorgeous leaves.

Hi Maggie, my weeks are not long enough, it’s all most Wednesday again LOL We had our wedding anniversary yesterday and we both forgot first time ever???? Days use to go quickly then weeks and now months go quickly LOL I use to sew so many things on my one as a child, and my mum would let me treadle the machine for her when I was around 3 or 4 with my hands LOL Loved making my churn-dash quilt this time round as I knew a lot more about points and cutting on the crossLOL Hugs Glenda

  3. Pamela says:

Your churn dash is fabulous! The border makes it absolutely stunning.

When I lived in the US, I had an old singer machine and cabinet that had been my grandmother’s. The old machines are like history coming alive.

    • glenda says:

Thanks for dropping in Pamela. Hope you are enjoying winter, its very beautiful up where you are now. It’s hot and so wet here, it will be lovely to see the sun stay with us for several days instead of just a few hrs each morning???? Sadly a city only 5 hrs drive from us are far worse off than we are and 100’s of homes have been flooded. I’ve been very busy with family and friends visiting so ahve not been able to find any time to work on my lovely old treadle sewing machine, may be this week coming? Cheers Glenda

  4. Gretchen says:

Your churndash flimsy is amazing! Can’t wait to see how you quilt it. The memory blocks are so lovely, what a wonderful tribute to your mother. I hope you can get the treadle cleaned, polished and ready to work. Happy stitching!

  5. Your hexagon quilt is looking spectacular, and that old machine is amazing, mud wasps or not! Gosh, even the decals or painting or however they did the designs back then — that looks like a glorious appliqué design! I read about some kind of trick for cleaning up that decorative faceplate on a vintage Singer machine when I was buying my first Featherweight machine. It was some kind of household cleaner product that I would never have thought to use, but cleaned mine up nicely without damaging or scratching. Wish I could remember for you, but if you google “restore Singer featherweight” or “clean Singer featherweight” you’re bound to find it.

    • glenda says:

Hi Rebecca, I’ve started working on the paint work but the top lacquer is going to come off if I’m not careful. I need to go back through Tim’s blog where he was showing us how he restored the paint work, I do remember it was very time consuming to keep the paint work. But it will be worth it. Will also google what you have mentioned and find out what others are doing. Draws are oak and not showing any borer which is so lucky. Top is in a bad state and I will have to replace it. I do have a featherweight but in great condition. Just need time to use it LOL. Cheers Glenda.

  6. Lennea says:

The churn dash border is stunning!

Yes, these old machines hold a special place in our hearts. I has my great aunts tredle, that she sewed on as a girl for many years. And now my sister has it. Can’t wait to see your beauty all fixed up.

    • glenda says:

Hi Lennea was so pleased to read that your Granny’s treadle was still in the family. They are real treasures. Specially if you live where I live and the power keeps been lost by constant trees coming down. But I do live in the rainforest so I have to live with it LOl. Had 3 trees down in our street in the last 4 days! Cheers from the wet monsoon season QLD OZ!!!

  7. Chris in Canada says:

I have restored Singer treadle here. It was in the kitchen for years as a catch-all table but is now on my quiltroom. I put learn how to wind the bobbin and learn how to use it on my 12 Things list for this year.

    • glenda says:

Well I hope you do learn how to use you sweet treadle Chris they are so wonderful to use, you have such control over the speed you sew. How I love a treadle. I’m just so happy to have one again. Cheers Glenda PS I have not finished restoring it yet LOL
