WOW or WIPs 23rd May 2018 Red and Green quilt top.

Hgfff

Sitting at my machine early this morning .

What

Update:- What I woke up to day Thursday in OZ but still Wednesday up In the Northen Hemisphere!

All though I have a full day ahead of me I decided to sit and appliqué down one leaf at least this morning, if I do even 1/2 a leaf each time I walk past my machine I may get these leaves completed to day there are 16 leaves????  My week has been spent working on my Red and  Green quilt top to be.

Jjhhbh

This is where I was up to on the weekend

Imjjj

Then I dreamt about my border as I was not comfortable with how they had done the original one. I had to start working on it straight away or I’d forget itLOL.   So I grabbed the first blank paper I could find and started drawing or drafting may be? Note the centre area on the side of the border???

Jjhhbgg

one needs a good pencil and rubber and stronger paper than I used in my hurry?

Uhgggg

to get a feel of it I’ve added unturned circles so they are very big over large circles!!!

Uhhhgg

I sat and needle turned circles and yet more circles every night and afternoon this week 165 up to last night!

Nnnnn

I wasn’t happy with the centre area on the side of the border, so extened the vine from the corner rather than the vine coming from the centre side Rose?

Jjnnnn

That to me looks more flowing and softer.  I sat up till late last night needle turning red circles but just could not manage the last 29 to finish this area.  But I do like how it will look one dayLOL. I need to add more paper and extend the vine on the other side of the border and I have my border pattern complete.  A great week for me.  Now I have my Red and Green quilt top designed how I want it?

I managed to make the last 29 circles this evening to finish this side, now

I managed to make the last 29 circles this evening to finish this side, now I need to make 60 more for the other side to finish it?  But not this week LOL this shows me how it’s going to look.

I found time to appliqué dow by machine 7 Dragonflies this week too.

Kjjnn

USing deep red for the body and head and a lovely aqua for the wings, we have a Dragonfly in these colours who flies around the swimming pool each summer in these colours.

old faithful that gives a beautiful new gem every day.

Ggvv

with out the self sewn cosmo some days I would have very little colour around me.

I was side

I was side tracked while taking photos noticed the corner of the section was completely closed in, I could not see the road or see any light this breeds mosquitos when you get dark spots in the garden so a small ladder and a saw was called for now I can see out.  lOL
Spotted

  1. Chris in Canada says:

    that’s a lot of circles

  2. Karen says:

I just love your design with all those circles – it is just so pretty. The red and green is so traditional from a quilt in the 1700’s I believe it was or is later I wonder – I would have to get my traditional applique book out to look. Love the attitude and you are right – 5 or 15 minutes grabbed here and there and a quilt top is done.
Love all your bugs in the photos some so different than ours

Hi Karen my Red and Green is based on a quilt Nancy made from a Red and Green quilt design that was in Homes and Gardens Patchwork and quilting 1985 called Locust Grove quilt, this was based on a Red and Green quilt that was in Locust Grove Georgian mansion where George Rodgers Clark finally lived in Louisville Kentucky. Not really sure when the quilt was made but looks around 1886!? I have of course changed lots of things but the stems and placement of the grapes and leaves are the original placements. My border is completely different. I will add a photo of the original design next week of the one that was in Better Homes and Garden. Cheers Glenda.

  3. Love how that red and green quilt is coming along / it is just stunning!

    • glenda says:

Hi Deb, this was inspired by a quilt that Nancy made some years ago which was designed by a 1886 Red and Green design, like all patterns I have to change things LOL SO Im only doing red grapes in different tones instead of red and green, Ive changed the leaf shape, and designing my own border!!!! Cheers Glenda

  4. Kyle says:

Your borders for the R &G are going to be stunning. You will be the circle queen when you get it done! Wondeful!

    • glenda says:

Thanks for dropping in Kyle I Have just loved designing this border it just grew so quickly amazing what you dream isn’t it LOL Now to finish number 2 3 and 4 centre blocks LOL Today machine appliquéing down more of the leaves on the 3rd block then only have number 4 to do. Thought I might get some done yesterday but only managed one? Cheers Glenda

  5. Robin says:

Your quilt is simple lovely. I love how you created the border, extending the vine from the corner instead of the center flower was a great idea.

    • glenda says:

Hi Robin lovely to see you. Yes I agree with you about extending just from the corner, in my dream they both flowered out but in my dream the quilt must have been HUGE to work LOL So choose just going from the corner. I’m happy with how its evolving. Hope Im still enjoying it after making another 1000 circles LOL Cheers Glenda

  6. Marita says:

    so many circles ….
    it´s a hard work.
The border with the longer branches is so much nicer!
    Greetings, Marita

    • glenda says:

Hi Marita, yes lots and lots of circles LOL I hope Im still having fun after another 1000 plus circles LOL At the moment appliquéing down some leaves on block 3 of the centre, I keep jumping from one part to another so I won’t get bored LOL I punch out my washaway paper templates with a builders punch I can punch out 100 in about 1 1/2 minutes this way but you need a steady hand to hold the punch and small sledge hammer !!!! LOl Cheers Glenda

  7. Alison says:

Really nice design coming on – so elegant! Just a few minutes working on a quilt is so relaxing and refreshing for the soul. A friend is despairing she will ever finish hand quilting a lovely quilt, but I have her on track doing 20 minutes most days, rather than big sessions that hurt her shoulder. Wish I was on that train to Karunda again – what a special trip that is!

    • glenda says:

Hi Alison glad your friend has you to help her, there is often times we need some one else to encourage or motivate us to keep going, I decided 3 years ago I had to start finishing my HUGE pile of UFO’s, I joined a couple of online groups who were wanting to do the same thing and we reported in at the end of each month boy that was the best thing I ever did. I have not seen much difference in the hight of that pile of UFO’s but I do have a pile of finished quilt tops to show for it LOL Now of course my pile of to quilt is growing LOL Cheers Glenda

  8. just when I was stunned by all the beautiful applique, you took me on the garden tour. I love dragonflies too, and your sculpture. I was thinking I need to do some dragonfly artwork as they are a sign of growth and future and we are in a stage of change. Your nature shots are so pretty. That white flower with the sun on it!!! The palms! Love the train. Then you show me a praying mantis… another favorite. They look like disapproving waiters to me heh heh

Dear LeeAnna, It is 11pm it’s very quiet and peaceful, not a sound to hear, even all the night creatures are quiet tonight. I have been sitting working on some little pieces of fabric from around 1930’s. Well used from old shirts and dress fabric that has seen better days. I bought a pile of partly made pieced blocks around 15 years ago but time did not allow me time to play with them, well now is the time. I’ve decided to make them up in a snowball arrangement and using some darker fabric from around 12 years ago, it’s been fun seeing them evolve in to little blocks, may be in a few months they could be a quilt top? I think about the maker of the original 1/4 circles and how she only had old used clothing to use but she so wanted to make a quilt top? Where’s most of us have the luxury of new fabric we can choose to buy from a shop close by? All though I use mostly used Kimono fabrics from Japan I do still buy fabric now and then. Funny now when I have a good stash I find lovely fabric in the shop where I work or workmates or friends give me fabric all the time. It Would be nice to live closer to other Quilters and be able to pass some of my stash I know I won’t use on. Time for me to go to bed now nearlly 11.30pm. Hugs Glenda.
