WOW or WIPs 18th Oct 2017 The Secret Garden by Esther Aliu

Last week I’d started on my 2017 mystery BOM Centre of Esther Aliu’s my goodness is it addictive, every 5 mins I had I would do some thing on it.  I was working on my first corner last Wednesday

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Finished corner all but the stems waiting to be hand appliquéd down, doing all my stems with hand made bias and machine applqiue.

My mitre bias corners

I may change my outer circle pieces with this green as the yellow is fading in to the background to much maybe. I will wait till the block is finished to decide.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Bias stems all machine stitched down, took me 2 hrs plus to just make these bias strips and machine them down.  I’m learning to machine applqiue and with these stems I’ve used 3 different stitch patterns for the applqiue!  Interesting what a different the different stitches give to the look of the fabric edge!   As I these stems are bias strips not raw edge I could play and not think about the raw edges.

Where I was up to last week playing with the lay out since then I have ironed on a light weight backing to the backing to stop the fabric from shifting its a medium weave 100% woo. Competed one corner on Wednesday.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Finally made all my bias strips and machine appliquéd them on.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Starting to make up the leaves and I can see that the green ring around the centre is to strong with them.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I will go back to my yellow outer ring but change my outer big leaves in the centre ring they are fading in to the back ground fabric to much I need more contrast there.

Taken in day light colours are very true.    Lots of needle basting still to do then start to applqiue them down.

so nice to see your family from France visiting – such a cute little one. I love your applique by machine – so nice and neat – I have to learn how to do that now that I have the new machine – must practice before I tackle anything!!

Hi Karen my family have just flown off to Dubai it was very sad to see them go but I had the most wonderful 2 weeks with them. Very little sewing done but lots and lots of cuddles instead LOL I thought I’d hate machine applqiue but really enjoying it, may be because I have plenty of time and more patience for going stitch by stitch in places and the Janome has some wonderful decorative stitches. Plus I have worked out the right hight for my chair and made myself a flat work bench that comes down the left hand side of me so I can rest my left arm all the time when sewing, this takes all the weight off my shoulder. Cheers Glenda

    Dear Glenda,
Little Lucie is a cutie-pie. You must miss her and the house is just to quiet when they are not there. Your Secret Garden and your garden is looking absolutely beautiful.
Your machine applique and combination of stitches is amazing. It is great to see you switch them up and not just use one stitch design.

  4. Kyle says:

Changing the center leaves was a good idea. The salmon stands out much better. I like using those bias stems with clean edges. It makes appliquing them soooo much easier. Lucid is a doll and it sounds like you all had a wonderful visit.
