Where I'm up to on my SG Cent

Where I’m up to on my SG Centre today.

Update 4pm Wednesday avo

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This avo I had 2 1/2 hrs where I could sew so made up some bias strips and machine appliquéd them on to one corner so the first of many pieces appliquéd on to my centre of SG  I need to needle baste those 6 petals and 6 yellow drops before I can hand applqiue them down but first I will add all the bias stems.   I had fun trying out different machine stitches to applique the stems down.

Very little sewing or quilting done this week for my link to Esther’s WOW or WIP’s , house full of friends and family for two weeks. First I ahve to apologise for not replying to you all last week, I did try several times but when every I had 5 mins and would sit down at the computer a wee sweetie nearly 2 would bring her book and say Please!!!!!!  End of computing, but she is only here for 2 weeks from France so every moment she wants to spend with Mummy Glenda is special.

I did start my Centre though at 10pm each night LOL

First I choose my centre flowers similar to what i had used in my vase blocks.First I choose my centre flowers similar to what i had used in my vase blocks.  I needed to join to pieces of my background fabric  to get my 20inch block it’s only 20 3/4 inch one way and 22inches the other but I’ll make it work LOL

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have added iron-on fussing to my flowers I have shaped  pink flowers  ready to iron on to backing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Printed m pattern and made it up for my draft pattern and started to play.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My template pinned to my backing fabric ready for marking. I first stitched all the stems on this template by machine using a very tight straight stitch

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All my stems tightly machine stitched

It was then easy to pull the paper apart mark the stem lines on to my fabric. I do retape the pattern as I go.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Remove paper and all my stems are very accurately marked. I call these my fish corners LOL

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I placed my background fabric in the centre of the first border we made these wee 4 1/2inch blocks earlier in the year My corner petals are the same fabric as I used in my triangle blocks we also made earlier.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m making my centre petals from some silk on washaway freezer paper and needle  turning my edges under, my centre circle and bands are cut from one piece of fabric and will be fussed on.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

my pink flower is also iron-on fussing with the centre cut out to show the yellow of the outer centre.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is a Daylight photo true to colour but I work around 10pm so no day light then LOL

Adding leaves is always fun, making these up with washaway freezer paper also.

Where I was up to late last night but took this photo early this morning in daylight!  4  of green leaves turned under 12 more to make and 32 petals to make up to with washawayfreezer paper good thing I rally like making leaf shapes LOL  and lots of bias to make up for my stems.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My yellow centre I fussed on to my heavy cotton iron cover that now has a hole in it LOL

In my garden very early this morning

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We have colour every were at present it so nice.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Chyrstal gave me a new colour to add to my collection; you can see why I use strong colours as I’m surrounded with strong colours.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Chrystal’s mum gave me my first Lilly just hope the turkeys don’t dig the bulbs out they love them.  I have put a cast iron fry pan next to it and heavy stones so hope this stops them?????

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hubby gave me two flower orchids for the patio this week they grow so well out side here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What a colour.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These are often called moth orchids as they dance in the breeze like moths.

Gorgeous flowers Glenda. Keep enjoying the wee one, all to soon she will be back in France.
I cannot quite understand what you are doing with the stems and paper though.
Tell me on the Mod board.. Ellie

    • glenda says:

Thanks Ellie, I machine sew the paper pattern down the stems I can then pull it apart like you do with postage stampsinstead of cutting the paper. It’s much easier when the paper template is pinned to the background paper than trying to use sissors. Cheers Glenda

those orchids are so pretty. Interesting how you put your pieces together and you were so lucky to have a flower print to use that you could cut big flowers out – I rarely ever have something like that in the stash and would have to search in a fabric store to find something I am sure

    • glenda says:

Hi Karen even though we have lived here for 20 years with these orchids in our garden it still amazes me when I see them bloom, I love how they bob in the breeze, in Papua New Guinea up in the highlands in some places the trees are smoothed in they and what a sight; one you never forget. We used to grow them in glasshouses in NZ and you would only get a few flowers if you were lucky!!!!! That fabric was given to me 23 years ago by a interior designer who had the sample fabric sent to her from France, but the thing is they were all 18 to 24 inchs square, when she knew I was doing patchwork she gave them to me as they were not suitable fabric for Papua New Guinea her clients wanted a more tropical look. But it has taken me till this year to use them LOL I did not even know they were chintz fabrics to a couple of years ago!!!!! and I have never seen any more like them down here in the shops. Hugs Glenda.

    Dear Glenda

What a neat trick to stitch through the paper to mark the design on your fabric! Glad you are having an awesome time with the family. Your Secret Garden will be ready and waiting for you, so enjoy those precious moments you get to spend with all the loved ones.

    • glenda says:

Hi Maggie my French family left very early this morning for the reef on a all day trip so my house is very quiet and I’m catching up on very over due mail. I sure will miss the patter of little running feet and chatter in the house when they fly out on Wednesday. Its been a lovely two weeks. Sewing has flown out the window but the cuddles make up for it thats for sure. Hugs Glenda

  4. Kyle says:

So many details in that block. It’s going to be beautiful.

    • glenda says:

Thanks Kyle, For me this is a Challenge block as I’m machine appliquéing the stems down and learning about the effect different stitches make. Ive made bias strips for my stems using the same fabric as I used for my triangle block stems but have added a contrasting colour for the small stems to make them stand out more I think its working LOL. My plump green leaves are turned needle basted but the skinny leaves that flip at the ends are made of iron fussing so I will get some 3D look there at the base of the flowers hopefully. My centre I may redo as its quiet heavy with my ironing board cover glued to the back LOL Cheers Glenda
