WOW or WIP’s with Esther 14th June 2017

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Where it all started making a sample for my SG wee blocks.   BUT it’s to dark.

I often get asked how do you always come up with the right colours in your quilts? well I don’t all ways LOL  My little wee blocks for DH proves that LOL

Now you can see what your finished block will look like with out having to cut up all those pieces

Background is to strong!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Cross is to deep!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

To much going on in the cross!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Just not working for me!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Its OK but not right for my 4 blocks thats another colour element that purple!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Just to much over load on the light background fabric. !

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ahhhhhhhhhhh  finally we get there LOL

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One little treasure completed and I’m happy LOL. Taken in day light so true colours here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At last we are there and on the way to making 40 of them finally!!!!!.

I will show how I’m making these wee blocks up, many of you will know how you like making these up but this is for the beginner like my self at machine sewing!!!!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I start by cutting my fabric up in to 4 1/2inch blocks. Cut these in 1/2 .so you have 2 triangles,  cut strips of my cross fabric in to 1 1/4inch strips then cross cut these in to just under 7inch cuts,   add a strip to one of my square triangles and sew this on.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Press seam and then press it open and add the other 1/2 square triangle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I can not sew a straight seam so the 1/4inch foot with a guide is my saving grace.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I now have a square with a strip down the centre of it my first 1/2 of my cross.  Cut this in 1/2 and you have 2 1/4 triangles again, ready for another strip to be added. I press my seams to the centre it makes for a neater finish.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sew strip to one triangle press seam open and add other triangle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

last seam sewn and pressed and we have a finished block but not square trim to a perfect 4 1/2 inch block then add leaves and finally appliqué on your needle turned leaves Walla one finished block LOL

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I make 6 or 8 blocks at a time doing chain sewing and find that enough for my back to sew at a machine.  Hope it you are able to follow what I just showed you and it helps some of you.

Its my birthday to day so I’m very short on time as I’m been very spoilt with friends and family popping in. SO Im off to link up with Esther’s WOW or WIP’s now.

Thank you for dropping in. Cheers Glenda

Thanks Shez Ive worked it out that it takes me over an hour to hand appliqué 4 of those wee leaves on to each wee block!!!!! I’ll be making these wee blocks for some time to come LOL Cheers Glenda

  2. Marita says:

    Happy birthday Glenda!
I love your fabrik choise! It’s so pretty!
    Have a nice day,
    Marita

  3. Gretchen says:

Thanks for the tutorial. You’ve done a very good job in lining up the stripe so it lines up correctly when you sew the 2nd triangle on the body. That can be tricky. Happy Birthday! I hope you had a wonderful day whatever you did to celebrate.

  4. Karen says:

that is a neat block – a lot of work for it though have a wonderful birthday celebration!!

    • glenda says:

Hi Karen my goodness my age is showing after such a great birthday and days full of family gatherings for a whole week while DGD was home from UNI for the week. It was so wonderful to have her home even for a week. I’ve not managed to get any thing done on the sewing machine but a few hrs each evening hand appliquéing thats all. Must try and make up this week on the machine!!!!! Hugs Glenda

  6. Maggie says:

Happy Birthday! Hope you feel 21 and well kissed. Love your wee blocks. Glad I decided this year to not take on too many projects and finish some of those WIP’s from the past. Your SG blocks are beautiful.

    • glenda says:

Thanks for the birthday wishes Maggie it was a wonderful wonderful day, made even better as my DGD was home from UNI for that week gosh I miss her popping in for an over night stay every Friday night !!!!! But she is enjoying her life at UNI and is all ready 1/2 way through her degree! I’m getting behind on my UFO’s and my two BOMs but I sure don’t ever have a bored moment LOL Hugs Glenda

  7. Kyle says:

Loved seeing your progression of thoughts and auditions.

    • glenda says:

Thank you Kyle some times as I said it does not just happen but I love to have a challenge its so satisfying at the end and Esther sure challenges us all LOL Its been more in the garden than the sewing room this week for me. Cheers Glenda

  8. Jenny says:

The final choice for your little blocks are gorgeous and what a great tutorial you have posted. First time I have done chain piecing, found making 10 blocks at a time was good for me, wish I had thought of only cutting the blocks in half first and then adding the strip as had lots more sewing than you to do.
Hope you had a wonderful birthday and lots of spoiling, you deserve it. Hugs Jenny

  9. Pamela says:

    Happy birthday! Great blocks!

    • glenda says:

Thanks Pamela it was such a happy day with friends and family. My friend in Kamakura has been putting up some wonderful photo’s taken of Fuji San lately and I see there is still snow on it hope you are having lovely sunny days though. Cheers Glenda

  10. Nancy says:

These blocks are just beautiful. I know they’re part of one of Esther’s quilts but they would be beautiful in a quilt with only these blocks, too, and maybe even larger. Love!
