WOW 19th April 2017 with Esther Aliu

My week has been spent finishing adding the last of the hexies to the border of my 1930 GMFG hexagon quilt and making a small wall crazy quilt for a special friend who is very ill in hospital.

Front of Cotrina's quilt

Roughly 12inchs by 14 inchs. Front of Cotrina’s quilt,  all the patches are silk and all tiny pieces I have added relate to memories we have shared over the last 35 years of our friendship.

Back of Cotrina's quilt

Back of Cotrina’s quilt Cotrina’s totem is the owl.

I started with a piece of washaway freezer paper for my base.

Ive used all the colours that Cotrina loves the most.

Then used all the threads c in a rainbow

Then used all the colours in a rainbow and sewed the blocks down in herring-bow stitch with DMC thread as she loves rainbows.

Then added lots of memories we shared.

I have a tiny 1 1/2 inch Belgium Lace owl that I planed to use at the base on the pink fabric but still have not found it!!!! SO ended up making a wee owl yesterday but it was to big and chunky for that pink patch so adding it to the back of the quilt so this wee quilt can be hung either way.

Back of Cotrina’s quilt. Today I completed sewing the border down on the back of the quilt by hand. Now it is ready to go off to Cotrina.

Last night I added the final hexagon to my border of the 1930’s GMFG quilt after years of struggling with it.  I wish I knew as much about how to do it 5 years ago as I do now LOL

Monday added my last hexagon to the border.  right side of border the hexagons on the edge have been quilted so sitting nice  and flat.  left hand side waiting to be quilted by hand.

This spider did not like me getting close and rushed up to the bottom egg sack when I went to close.

First time Ive seen this spider and I don’t think Id like to be bitten by it, it was nery aggressive and with those bright red colours its a good warning to stay away.

Im off to link with Esther Aliu’s WOW or WIP’s to day.

Thank you for dropping in to see me, hope you all managed as much sewing this week as I have Cheers Glenda

Your friend is unlucky to be ill, but lucky to have you as a caring friend to make her a tiny quilt filled with love and happy memories. It’s a lovely piece that you’ve created for her.
Love your hexagons too – a long running project, but delightful! Your work is inspirational.

lovely quilts and I like how you are finishing off the hexies – a lot of work though. Love the garden flowers and plants they are so pretty and so totally different from what I have in the states.

What a sweet quilt filled with special memories for both you and your friend. The hexies are beautiful and will be extra lovely when you’re finished. I’d stay away from that spider too, pretty but probably not too nice.

Hi Kyle and thank you for stopping by and chatting. Yes it is filled with lots of memories. Interesting thing about the hexy quilt I’m starting to see so many new things I’d over looked, by quilting each little hexagons and now thinking this was made by different quilters, some pieces of the green hexie’s have two and 3 pieces of fabric joined to make the fabric big enough to cut out the hexie!!!!. I thought all the green was the same fabric but there are many different green fabrics been used. The flower coloured pattern fabric I thought was from 1930 but now seeing much older pieces from 1920 and earlier. Many of the plain fabrics have faded all most grey if it was blue or green !!!!! Plus the stitches vary? Cheers Glenda

  4. What a very thoughtful crazy quilt for for your friend! It’s beautiful! I love all the little additions, especially the teeny bag!!!! And such a gorgeous backing too! It was nice to see how you made the block! You are a kind friend!
Great to see your first quilt is still being used!
I’ve enjoyed reading about your hexie project too!
Oh, how I love your pictures from the garden ….. but please don’t get yourself bitten by a nasty in your own garden!
    Take care!
